Ralph Sanford

Biography

Ralph Sanford was an American film actor who built a long career out of small roles, appearing in more than 180 films and at least 200 television episodes between 1930 and 1960, mostly in bit parts and supporting parts. Born in Springfield in 1899, he started professionally in 1924 as a dancing partner of Ray Bolger, moved to California in 1928, and earned his first movie credit in 1933. He became a familiar face in Westerns and was often cast as tough guys. Television work began in 1951, and he was probably best remembered for The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, where he appeared in 21 episodes, 16 of them as Mayor Jim Kelly during the 1958 to 1959 season. He also acted on Broadway in plays including Between Two Worlds, They Shall Not Die, and Ballyhoo of 1932. He died in 1963.
