Dick Elliott

Biography

Dick Elliott was an American character actor, born in Boston, who appeared in more than 240 films between the 1930s and his death in 1961. He often played blustery types, including politicians, and was also known for portraying Santa Claus on programs hosted by Jimmy Durante, Red Skelton and Jack Benny. One of his memorable film moments came in It's a Wonderful Life (1946), where he scolded James Stewart's character for talking too much instead of kissing Donna Reed's character. On television he appeared in the Adventures of Superman and had repeat roles on December Bride, Sugarfoot, Maverick, Tales of the Texas Rangers and The Real McCoys. He was perhaps best known for playing Mayor Pike in the early Andy Griffith Show episodes, one of his final screen jobs.
