Plot summary
The Florida Keys in 1840: clipper ships bound between the Mississippi and the Atlantic run onto the shoals off Key West, and salvage of their cargo is a profitable trade. Loxi Claiborne has taken over the family business since her father's death. After a hurricane, the Jubilee founders. Loxi sails the Claiborne out to claim it, but the rival salvager King Cutler has beaten her there and fires across her bow to warn her off. She takes crew members off the wreck, among them Captain Jack Stuart, found lashed to the mast. She nurses him at home. Jack wants command of the Deveraux line's new steamship, the Southern Cross, and fears the loss of the Jubilee will be used to deny it to him. In Charleston, Loxi sets out to charm Steve Tolliver into granting Jack the post.
