Plot summary
In the last months of the Civil War, Confederate officer Clete Mattson takes two million dollars in Union gold across the Rio Grande and rides into Zona Libre, a lawless enclave in Mexico. He wants rifles and munitions for the Confederate army, and he opens negotiations with General Calleja, the territory's ruler, who grants American outlaws and deserters sanctuary there in exchange for a share of what they steal. A Union man working in the enclave wants the gold back and the Confederate supply line blocked. Calleja sees what the bullion is worth and keeps postponing the sale of the guns. Carmelita Carias, a local woman, is drawn to Mattson.
