Plot summary
A lynch mob has gathered to hang Tim "Pop" Keith, a cattle rustler, for the shooting death of rancher Ned Roden's eldest son. Federal marshal Len Merrick and his deputies intervene and pull Pop free, and Merrick declares the prisoner will answer to a court in Santa Loma. Most of the crowd accepts this; Roden does not, promising a justice of his own and sending his son Dan to round up the ranch hands while he buries the boy. Pop offers his cabin for the night, and Ann Keith, his daughter, ambushes the marshal there; Merrick disarms her. Ann travels with the party toward Santa Loma, and Merrick strikes out on an unexpected desert route to find out whether they are being trailed.
