Virginia Mayo
Biography
Virginia Mayo was an American actress who started in vaudeville and by the late 1940s had become Warner Bros.' biggest box-office draw. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she began performing after high school and toured the vaudeville circuit before reaching Broadway in 1941. Samuel Goldwyn signed her to a film contract, and her first starring role came in the Bob Hope comedy The Princess and the Pirate (1944). She became Danny Kaye's leading lady in Wonder Man (1945), then earned favorable reviews as a gold digger in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). After Warner Bros. took over her contract, she appeared in the gangster classic White Heat (1949) and the war adventure Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951). Her later credits included The Silver Chalice (1954), The Proud Ones (1956), and Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). She was one of the first to receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and later worked on stage.
