Plot summary
In 1946 Lady Mary Craven visits an orphanage in America and tells the children about an exchange that will send one of them to Misselthwaite Manor, the English house that is now an orphanage run by Martha Sowerby. In the garden she meets Lizzie Buscana, who is tending a rose bush that belonged to her mother, and describes the secret garden. Lizzie joins the exchange so that she can see it for herself. In England she learns that the children are allowed into the garden only on Sunday after church and must not touch anything. She becomes friendly with Geraldine, Steven and Robert, and one night after curfew she slips out to the garden and finds how much care it needs.
