Plot summary

In a superstitious Transylvanian village, Martin is the one person who has never felt the shivers, the fear that everyone else speaks of. He is intelligent and fearless, and he cannot understand what frightens his neighbors. He leaves home and sets out into the world to learn what the shivers are for himself. His road brings him to King Vladimir V, who needs the ghosts and evil spirits cleared from his castle. Men who took the task before have died, and the king expects Martin to die as well. Martin accepts without fear.
