Plot summary
In 1893 London, H.G. Wells reveals a time machine to a skeptical dinner party that includes his friend, the surgeon John Leslie Stevenson. Constables arrive searching for Jack the Ripper, and blood-stained gloves point to Stevenson. He reaches the laboratory first and vanishes in the machine. Wells follows him to November 5, 1979, and finds the device on display in a San Francisco museum. The violence and greed of the century he expected to be a socialist utopia shock him. He exchanges his old British currency and meets Amy Robbins, a bank employee who directed Stevenson to a hotel. Wells confronts Stevenson, who says the modern age suits him and wants the key that would keep the machine at his destination.
