Plot summary
In a monastery library, H. P. Lovecraft asks to see the Alchemical Encyclopedia, then steals a monk's key and lets himself into the cellar vault that holds the Necronomicon. The door shuts behind him, and he settles in to read and record what the book contains. In the first tale, Edward De Lapoer returns to America to inherit his family's derelict hotel, where the lawyer Nancy Gallmore warns him it is sinking. His uncle Jethro once managed it. In the second, Emily Osterman takes a room in a Boston building owned by Lena Kamen, who lives there with Dr. Richard Madden, a man who never leaves his third-floor room. In the third, Philadelphia officers Sarah and Paul chase a suspect called the Butcher; their cruiser flips, and Sarah follows a blood trail into an old warehouse.
