Plot summary
In tsarist Russia at the turn of the century, Yakov Bok claims to be a Gentile and is taken on at a brick factory in Kiev. When a Ukrainian boy named Andrei Yushchinsky is murdered, Bok is charged with the ritual murder of a Gentile child, the old accusation of the blood libel. A rape charge is brought against him as well, and he is jailed. The case against him is false. Officials set out to humiliate him and to force a confession from him, and he lives with the fear that he will be exposed and that a new wave of pogroms will follow.
