Plot summary
In 1921, Henry Buchanan comes from England to teach at a boys' school in a small Canadian town. He is a pacifist, and when the town learns of his record as a conscientious objector in the First World War, the citizens are outraged. He also forms friendships with two women. Mrs. Boswell is a rich recluse. Clarissa's father is the town's most prominent citizen.
