Plot summary
In January 1802, Horatio Hornblower, Buckland, Bush and Kennedy are brought before a court-martial at Kingston, Jamaica, on a charge of mutiny for relieving their captain of HMS Renown, James Sawyer. Commodore Pellew, Captain Hammond and Captain Collins sit on the tribunal. Pellew is fond of Hornblower, once his subordinate, while Hammond takes the lieutenant for an overambitious schemer. The hearing moves between Kingston and the Renown six months earlier, after Sawyer's failed attack on a Spanish fort left the ship in the lieutenants' hands. Buckland wants to admit defeat and sail for Kingston, but Hornblower puts forward a plan to strike the fort at night from the land and trap the Spanish ships in the bay below. A landing party under Hornblower, Kennedy and Bush goes ashore.
