Plot summary
Cattle are turning up mutilated on the Hopi reservation where Youngman Duran serves as a deputy. Abner Tasupi, the medicine man who raised him after his parents died, says he has cast a spell that will bring the world to an end that night, and Youngman takes the talk for the rambling of a man on datura root. Tribal council chairman Walker Chee has found oil shale in Maskai Canyon, the tribe's most sacred ground, and is dynamiting the caves while he bargains over the processing rights with Roger Piggott of Peabody Oil, anxious that news of the attacks not reach the media before the deal closes. A British scientist is certain that vampire bats carrying bubonic plague are behind the attacks. Anne Dillon, a medical student who runs the reservation clinic, is in love with Youngman.
