Plot summary
Hansel and his sister Gretel are the children of Stefan, an impoverished woodcutter, and his wife Maria. When a famine strikes their village, Maria tells the two children to leave their home. Hansel and Gretel walk into the North woods, an evil forest, leaving a trail of bread crumbs to find their way back. Birds eat the crumbs, and the children lose the path. Among the trees they come upon a gingerbread house, where an old woman named Griselda lives. This live-action telling of the Brothers Grimm tale is a musical, and its songs adapt Engelbert Humperdinck's opera of the same name.

SPOILER
Director Len Talan wanted to dismantle the witch's house in stop-action at the end of the film, but that was too time-consuming, so construction supervisor Aria Ben-Yishay had the local fire department pump fire-fighting foam through the back of the set and out its windows and roof.- To save money, the Cannon Movie Tales films were shot two or three at a time, and Hansel and Gretel was filmed simultaneously with Sleeping Beauty (1987), the two crews often competing for the same limited equipment, costumes and sets.
