Plot summary
In 1996, the treasure hunter Brock Lovett searches the wreck of the Titanic for a diamond necklace called the Heart of the Ocean. A safe recovered from the seabed holds a sketch of a young woman wearing the jewel, dated April 14, 1912. Rose Dawson Calvert, who says she is that woman, comes aboard his research vessel and recounts her own voyage: at seventeen she sails in first class toward a marriage she does not want, with Cal Hockley and her mother, Ruth, while the family's debts hang over the arrangement. Unhappy and ready to jump from the stern, she meets Jack Dawson, a poor artist traveling in third class, who stops her.

- Although Jack was a fictional character, in Fairview Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where 121 Titanic victims are buried, there is a grave labeled "J. Dawson". The producers did not know of the real J. Dawson until after the film was released.
- Winslet sent Cameron daily notes from England, which led him to invite her to Hollywood for auditions. He was initially uncertain even after her screen test impressed him, so she sent him a single rose with a card signed, "From Your Rose", and lobbied him by phone.

A nephew of William Murdoch objected to his uncle's portrayal, seeing it as damaging to Murdoch's heroic reputation. A few months later Fox vice president Scott Neeson went to Dalbeattie, Scotland, where Murdoch lived, to deliver a personal apology and a £5000 donation to Dalbeattie High School's William Murdoch Memorial Prize.- The Heart of the Ocean necklace was donated to Sotheby's auction house in Beverly Hills for an auction benefiting the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and Southern California's Aid For AIDS. It sold to an unidentified Asprey client for $1.4 million, on the agreement that Dion would wear it two nights later at the 1998 Academy Awards.

In the original version of the ending, Brock and Lizzy see the elderly Rose at the stern and fear she is about to commit suicide. She reveals she has possessed the Heart of the Ocean all along, tells Brock that life is priceless and throws the diamond into the ocean, and Brock laughs at his stupidity.
