Biography

Peter Vaughan was an English actor whose long career took in repertory theater, film and television, usually in supporting parts. Born Peter Ewart Ohm in Wem, Shropshire in 1923, he joined the Wolverhampton Repertory Theatre in 1939, and his first screen appearance came in 1959, an uncredited part in The 39 Steps. After further small roles, often as policemen, in Village of the Damned (1960) and The Victors (1963), he took his first leading role in Smokescreen (1964). He became widely known as Genial Harry Grout in Porridge and its 1979 film, and appeared in Straw Dogs (1971), Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Crucible (1996), Face (1997) and Les Misérables (1998). His performance as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Our Friends in the North brought a BAFTA Television Best Actor nomination in 1997, and he played Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones. He died in 2016.

    Vaughan's first breakthrough stage role came in 1964, when he played Ed in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr Sloane at Wyndham's Theatre.

    Vaughan's first film work came in 1959, an uncredited police officer part in The 39 Steps. He went on playing small parts, among them more policeman cameos in Village of the Damned and The Victors, until his first starring role in Smokescreen (1964).

    Vaughan played Denethor in the 1981 BBC Radio production of The Lord of the Rings and Superintendent Kirk in a BBC dramatization of a Peter Wimsey novel.
