Plot summary
In a California suburb, young Gregory Tudor learns that Butch Brickle, the local ice cream man people call the Ice Cream King, has been killed in a drive-by shooting. Years later Gregory runs the same truck and parlor, calling himself the Ice Cream Prince. In the rundown shop he produces frozen treats filled with insects and pieces of human bodies. When Roger, a boy from the neighborhood, goes missing one night, the other children, who have seen Gregory's strange behavior, suspect that he took Roger. The police and Nurse Wharton, Gregory's landlord, do not. Three kids, Johnny, Heather and Tuna, set out to find Roger themselves.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Clint Howard, who played Gregory Tudor, screamed and yelled at the top of his lungs every day while driving to the set to give the character a more gravelly, raspy voice; he also modeled the performance on an ice cream man in his hometown who swore at children.
- Jan-Michael Vincent, the actor who played Detective Gifford in Ice Cream Man, was constantly drunk during the production of the film.
- Paul Norman set out to make Ice Cream Man as a horror film aimed at children, inspired by The Goonies, The Monster Squad and the miniseries It; it was his first and only attempt at mainstream filmmaking.
- Mashed potatoes, not ice cream, appear in many shots of Ice Cream Man, standing in as a substitute for the frozen dessert.
- Steve Garvey, who played Mr. Spodak, worked for only one day on Ice Cream Man, and spent half of that day signing baseballs for his fans.
- David Naughton signed on to play Martin Cassera after reportedly falling in love with the script, which reminded him of John Landis's script for An American Werewolf in London, another horror film he had appeared in.
- In Ice Cream Man, child actor JoJo Adams wore a pillow under his shirt to make himself look fat for his role as Tuna Cassera.
