Plot summary
A widowed neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr devised a way to enter the skull through a screw top, and he is still grieving his late wife Rebecca. Driving, he strikes Dolores Benedict, a gold-digging woman fleeing the scene of her husband's fatal heart attack. He operates and she survives; while she recuperates he falls for her, and they wed. Dolores pleads illness whenever he grows amorous. The two travel to Vienna for a medical conference, in a city alarmed by a killer who strikes in elevators. There Michael meets Dr. Alfred Necessiter, a scientist who preserves living brains in liquid-filled jars. One of the brains, Anne Uumellmahaye's, communicates with him telepathically.
