Colin Jeavons

Colin Jeavons is a retired Welsh actor and television presenter whose career took in character parts and many literary adaptations, particularly from Charles Dickens. Born in Newport in 1929, he trained at the Old Vic Theatre School and began on stage at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in a 1946 Twelfth Night, later working with the Bristol Old Vic, Royal Court Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company. On television he first appeared in a 1956 Nom-de-Plume episode, then played Richard Carstone in Bleak House, Uriah Heep in David Copperfield and Wemmick in Great Expectations. He was Max Quordlepleen in The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (1981), Inspector Lestrade for Granada Television's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Tim Stamper in House of Cards and To Play the King. His films included The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Frankenstein Created Woman (1967), The Island (1980), Schizo (1976), Stalin (1992) and Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil (1985). He retired from acting in 1993.
