Plot summary
Hogswatch is the midwinter festival in the city of Ankh Morpork, when the jolly fat man in red called the Hogfather flies his sleigh and leaves presents while children listen for trotter-beats on the roof. This year he is gone. Someone wants him out of the way, and because an anthropomorphic personification cannot be helped by humans, Death takes on the Hogfather's duties himself. His manservant Albert attends him, and his granddaughter Susan wants to know what became of the missing Hogfather. Across the city, Teatime, of the Guild of Assassins, gathers a team that includes the student wizard Mr Sideney and the man-mountain Banjo, and a band of wizards led by Mustrum Ridcully is also drawn in.

- Pratchett himself has a cameo as a toymaker, on top of his official script credit of 'Mucked About By'; although not named in the original book or the script, he decided the toymaker was called Joshua Isme and his shop Toys Is Me, a play on Toys R Us.
- The Death of Rats was credited as played by "Dorckey Hellmice", which is an anagram of "Michelle Dockery", the actress who performed the part.
- Death's line to Albert, "You may think I've already thought of that, but I could not possibly comment", mirrors a phrase of Francis Urquhart's, the character Ian Richardson also played in the BBC series House of Cards.
- First aired in two 1.5-hour episodes on 17 and 18 December 2006, it was the first live-action film adaptation of a Discworld novel, and it won the Best Visual Effects award at the 2007 British Academy Television Craft Awards.
- Some interior and exterior scenes were shot in Spring 2005 at Sutton House, Hackney, with extensive use of artificial snow to create the story's winter setting out of season.
