Plot summary
Ethan Hunt is pulled out of a Moscow prison by Jane Carter and Benji Dunn and given a new assignment: the IMF team must enter the Kremlin and retrieve the files of a man known as Cobalt. Inside, their cover is blown and a bomb leaves much of the building in ruins. Ethan is arrested by the Russian agent Anatoly Sidorov, who holds him responsible. He escapes and meets the IMF Secretary and the analyst William Brandt, who names Cobalt as Kurt Hendricks, a strategist who wants a nuclear war between Russia and the United States. The President invokes Ghost Protocol, disavowing the IMF, and the Secretary tells Ethan to keep hunting Hendricks without support. Ethan's team regroups and follows the trail to Dubai.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Although Tom Cruise appears to be free solo climbing the Burj Khalifa with the help of special gloves, he was securely attached to the tower at all times by multiple cables, which Industrial Light & Magic digitally erased in post-production.
- The fight between Hunt and Hendricks plays out in a Mumbai automated multi-level parking garage that was constructed over a six-month period just for the film, one of many interiors shot at Vancouver's Canadian Motion Picture Park Studios.
- Brad Bird worked his trademark "A113", the classroom he attended at the California Institute of the Arts, into the film twice: as the design print on Hanaway's ring in the flashback sequence, and as the drop callsign Alpha 1-1-3.
- Midway through production Cruise brought in screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, with whom he had worked on Valkyrie, to rewrite the screenplay; McQuarrie said the script had fantastic sequences but a mystery that was very complicated, and what he did was about clarity.
