Plot summary
Dennis Doyle gets cold feet on the day he is due to marry Libby, and she is left to raise their son, Jake, on her own. Five years on, Dennis works as a security guard at a London boutique and learns that Libby is seeing Whit, an American executive who is successful and arrogant and who has become part of Jake's life. Hearing that Whit is training for the Nike River Marathon, Dennis, out of shape and afraid of losing his place with Jake, signs up for the same race. He trains with help from his best friend, Gordon, Libby's cousin, who has placed a large bet on him, and from his landlord, Mr. Goshdashtidar, whose coaching methods are unusual.
