• Jack Nicholson, who played Jack Torrance in The Shining (1980), was approached to appear in Ready Player One's Shining sequence but declined the offer because he had retired, director Mike Flanagan revealed in October 2019.
• When Ready Player One filmed in Birmingham, England, standing in for a dystopian Columbus, Ohio, a planned explosion at the Ludgate Hill Car Park, where caravan homes had been partly built, sent local businesses and residents to call emergency services because the production gave no prior notice.
• The Blade Runner material central to the novel was cut: because Blade Runner 2049 was shooting at the same time, its producers at Alcon Entertainment feared Spielberg's film could damage their commercial prospects, so the team substituted a sequence set inside The Shining.
• The Overlook Hotel sequence was mostly a digital recreation made from a high-quality telecine of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, allowing new camera angles and shots that did not appear in the original; only a few scenes, such as the Grady twins, used real actors.
• Ernest Cline's novel made heavy use of the character Ultraman, but because the rights to him were still under legal dispute the film replaced him with the titular robot from The Iron Giant.
• John Williams was set to compose the score in June 2016 but left the project in July 2017 to score Spielberg's The Post, and Alan Silvestri took over scoring duties.
• Spielberg met with Industrial Light & Magic for three hours a day, three days a week to discuss the visual effects, and ILM produced 900 shots in total; Spielberg called it the most difficult movie he had done since Saving Private Ryan.
• Elle Fanning, Olivia Cooke and Lola Kirke were the frontrunners for the role of Art3mis, with Cooke announced as having been cast in the part by September 2015.
