Plot summary
Sam Greenfield has never had much luck. She lives at the Summerland Home For Girls with Hazel, her younger friend and roommate, who hopes to be adopted. When the home forces Sam out, Hazel stays behind. After sharing her food with a black cat, Sam comes across a penny and wants Hazel to have it for the collection of lucky items she keeps. The penny improves Sam's own luck until she flushes it down a toilet. The cat scolds her for losing it, and she learns he talks. She follows him through a portal into the Land of Luck, where leprechauns make good luck for people on Earth. Bob, the cat, needs the penny for traveling and would be banished if anyone learned he lost it, so the two agree to fetch another from the Penny depot.
