Plot summary
Simon Garden works as a probation officer and is transferred to Manchester, where he develops feelings for the police constable Emma. When Kirsty, a young offender, is charged with concealing drugs in a toy, Simon handles the case and grows suspicious of Detective Inspector Burton. Following Burton to a nightclub, Simon watches him kill an accountant; when he is spotted, Simon runs and leaves his wallet behind. Burton, who now leads the murder inquiry, warns Simon that he will be charged with the killing unless he stays quiet. Simon remembers that the club's cameras filmed the night and learns the tape is held in the vault of the West Clyde Bank. He asks George, Jeff and Colin, men he once paroled, for help in getting it back.
