Plot summary
Two years after Solomon Lane's capture, the remnants of his network, the Syndicate, have regrouped as the Apostles, hired by the extremist John Lark to obtain three plutonium cores for nuclear bombs. Ethan Hunt and his IMF team try to intercept the cores in Berlin, but the Apostles take Luther Stickell hostage. Ethan saves Luther instead, and the cores disappear. CIA director Erika Sloane confronts Ethan over the failure and sends her agent August Walker along with the team, directing him to regard anyone as expendable. Ethan and Walker make a high-altitude jump over Paris and enter a nightclub where Lark is expected to buy the cores from the arms broker Alanna Mitsopolis.

- Tom Cruise broke his right ankle after colliding with a wall during a stunt jump between buildings for a foot pursuit scene. He completed the scene and moved off camera before acknowledging the injury, and that footage was used in Fallout.
- Cruise performed the single-take skydive 106 times, including practice jumps, falling at 200 mph from 25,000 feet out of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III with a camera operator alongside him, and inhaled pure oxygen for 20 minutes before each jump to avoid decompression sickness.
- Christopher McQuarrie, unwilling to let Henry Cavill shave unless compensated, asked the Justice League production for $3 million to digitally re-add Cavill's facial hair for Fallout until it regrew; Paramount refused permission altogether, so the mustache had to be digitally removed for Justice League.
- Cruise's injury delayed the shoot so badly that the $178-180 million budget swelled to about $250-260 million, including paying to retain the cast and crew in the interim, though most of those costs were repaid by the film's insurance.
- For the scene in which Ethan commandeers the craft, Cruise earned a pilot's license in 12 days and spent about 18 months training for the stunt.
- The final script ran only 33 pages. McQuarrie felt that worked for Mission: Impossible films, where a broad outline for locations, sets and actors is provided, but scenes are adjusted, added or removed based on how events unfold during filming.
- Jeremy Renner declined to reprise his role as William Brandt, partly because he was committed to filming Avengers: Infinity War, although he ultimately did not appear in that film, and partly because frequent script changes on the previous films had interfered with time with his family.
