Plot summary
Two British enthusiasts of comic books and science fiction, Graeme Willy and Clive Gollings, come to the United States for San Diego Comic-Con and then head into the desert Southwest on a road trip to see UFO sites. Clive is writing a science fiction novel, and Graeme draws the illustrations for it. A stop at a diner brings them up against two hostile locals, and they drive off after accidentally crashing into the man's truck. Later, on a remote highway at night, a car swerves and crashes, and the driver is Paul, a gray alien who has spent sixty years in a top-secret military base and is being pursued by Secret Service agents. Graeme offers him a ride; Clive faints. Special Agent Zoil reaches the crash site and reports to his unseen superior.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- After the filmmakers mentioned the project to Spielberg, he suggested he might make a cameo appearance, and a scene was written in which he is a voice on a speakerphone in 1980, discussing ideas with Paul for his soon-to-become box office hit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
- On set, actor Joe Lo Truglio physically stood in for the CGI alien Paul so the human cast had someone to act against, while Seth Rogen, who voiced Paul, contributed motion-capture work in pre- and post-production.
