Plot summary
On the day James Tiberius Kirk is born, a Romulan ship, the Narada, emerges from a lightning storm in space and attacks the USS Kelvin. His father, first officer George Kirk, takes command and orders the crew to abandon ship. Kirk grows up reckless in Iowa. On Vulcan, Spock, the son of Sarek and the human Amanda Grayson, is admitted to the Vulcan Science Academy but enlists in Starfleet instead, after the Academy counts his human mother against him. In a bar brawl, Kirk meets Captain Christopher Pike, who urges him to enlist. At Starfleet Academy he befriends Doctor Leonard McCoy, then faces a disciplinary charge from Commander Spock over the Kobayashi Maru test. A distress signal from Vulcan interrupts the hearing.

- Abrams was concerned about casting a Korean-American as the Japanese character Hikaru Sulu, but George Takei explained to the director that Sulu was meant to represent all of Asia on the Enterprise, so Abrams went ahead with John Cho.
- Majel Barrett, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, reprised her role as the voice of the Enterprise's computer, completing it two weeks before her death on December 18, 2008; the film was dedicated to her as well as to Gene.
- Chris Pine described his first audition for James T. Kirk as awful, because he could not take himself seriously as a leader. Abrams did not see it, and only after Pine's agent met Abrams' wife did the director decide to give him another audition, opposite Quinto.
- Abrams and the writers met Nimoy at his house, where Orci recalled the actor sizing them up before being told how important he was to them; he went silent, and his wife Susan Bay told the team he had remained in his chair, emotionally overwhelmed by his decision.
- For the audition Quinto wore a blue shirt and flattened his hair down to feel more like Spock, and for the role he bound his fingers to practice the Vulcan salute, shaved his eyebrows and grew and dyed his hair.
- Adrien Brody had discussed playing the role of Spock with the director before Zachary Quinto was cast.
- Chris Hemsworth was cast as George Kirk, Kirk's father, only after Abrams had met with Matt Damon about playing the role.
