Plot summary
Earth's energy crisis has pushed nations toward war, and a crew orbits aboard the Cloverfield station to test the Shepard particle accelerator, a device meant to supply unlimited power. Hamilton, Schmidt, Tam, Volkov, Monk, Mundy and their commander Kiel have spent two years on the machine without success, with fuel for only three more attempts. Volkov accuses Schmidt of stalling while Russia's reserves run low. A broadcast interview with Mark Stambler warns that firing the Shepard could open a gateway to other dimensions. Back on Earth, Hamilton's husband Michael wakes to a huge explosion and drives toward the hospital where he works. Then the crew runs the test again.
