Plot summary
Ethan Hunt stops a nerve gas shipment being moved out of Minsk by the Syndicate, a consortium of rogue field operatives from several intelligence agencies that he has been tracking. The Syndicate compromises an IMF station in London, and he is gassed unconscious there. In Washington, CIA director Alan Hunley persuades a Senate committee to disband the IMF and absorb its assets. Benji Dunn and William Brandt transfer to the CIA, while Luther Stickell resigns. Ethan wakes in captivity, held by the ex-KGB agent Janik Vinter, and escapes with help from Ilsa Faust, an undercover MI6 agent. Six months later, a fugitive for refusing to surrender to the CIA, he passes word to Benji and arranges tickets to Turandot at the Vienna State Opera, asking Benji's help in identifying a blond man he saw in London.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Tom Cruise clung to the outside of a flying Airbus A400M at times more than 5,000 feet up with no stunt double. The crew had only 48 hours of access to the aircraft, which took off and landed eight times before they got the shot.
- For the underwater vault sequence Cruise trained with diving specialist Kirk Krack until he could hold his breath for three minutes, and the shot was taken in one unbroken take; stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood says he actually managed just over six minutes.
- Cruise picked Rebecca Ferguson after seeing her in the miniseries The White Queen and noticing her resemblance to Ingrid Bergman, then posted her a DVD of Hitchcock's Notorious; the name Ilsa Faust nods to Bergman's Ilsa Lund in Casablanca, herself a spy.
- Drew Pearce's early drafts opened in the 1960s and would have brought back Dan Briggs from the original television series, but Christopher McQuarrie refused fan service for its own sake and gave the slot to the new character Ilsa Faust; Bryan Burk's attempt to find a place for Martin Landau also collapsed.
- Filming was halted in February 2015 so that Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise could rework the ending, and shooting only finished on 12 March 2015.
- Joe Kraemer's score weaves Puccini into the spy music: three cues, "Escape to Danger", "A Matter of Going" and "Finale and Curtain Call", quote Nessun dorma from Turandot, the opera staged in the Vienna sequence, alongside Lalo Schifrin's television themes.
