Plot summary
In the third year of the USS Enterprise's five-year mission, the ship puts in at Starbase Yorktown for supplies and shore leave. James T. Kirk has put in for a promotion to vice admiral, and he wants Spock to take command of the Enterprise in his place. Spock is told that Ambassador Spock, his counterpart from another timeline, has died, and he and Uhura have agreed to step back from their relationship. A distress call arrives from Kalara, who says her crew is stranded on a planet beyond an uncharted nebula. The Enterprise sets out to help and is met by a vast swarm of small alien ships that tear the starship apart. The swarm's leader, Krall, boards the ship looking for a relic called the Abronath, and Kirk gives the order to abandon ship.
