Plot summary
In 1935 a case on the Isle of Man draws the parapsychologist Nandor Fodor and his assistant Anne. The Irvings, a family at a farm on the island, say a mysterious entity has contacted them: a talking mongoose called Gef, pronounced Jeff. People report hearing Gef talk, predict events, recite poems and make telephone calls. Most residents believe the mongoose exists. Accounts of his voice far outnumber sightings, which are brief glimpses of something furry. Voirrey Irving, the daughter of the family, is known as a skilled ventriloquist.
