Biography

Karl Urban is a New Zealand actor whose career started with local film and TV roles, among them Xena: Warrior Princess. Born in Wellington, he made his first Hollywood appearance in the horror film Ghost Ship (2002). He became known for playing Éomer in two of The Lord of the Rings films, then appeared as Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy (2004), John Grimm in Doom (2005), and Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012). He played Dr. Leonard McCoy in the Star Trek reboot series, including Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016), and took roles in Pete's Dragon (2016) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). On television, he starred in Almost Human and as Billy Butcher in The Boys. He also voiced the lead in The Sea Beast (2022) and stars as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, Urban was one of a number of actors in the running to play James Bond, the British secret service agent, in Casino Royale, which was directed by fellow New Zealander Martin Campbell.

    Urban left Victoria University of Wellington after one year in the Bachelor of Arts program to pursue a career in acting.
