Plot summary
In the summer of 1963, Jeffrey Willis, eighteen, lives in Brooklyn with his family. Two friends bring him to El Flamingo, a private beach club in Queens, for a Fourth of July gin rummy game. There he meets Carla Samson, a California college student staying with her cousin Joyce and Joyce's parents, Phil and Phyllis Brody. Jeffrey repairs a car engine and the club hires him to park cars. His father Arthur, a plumber, had lined up office work for him at an engineering company and disapproves. Phil, the club's gin rummy champion, warms to Jeffrey over the game.
