Plot summary
Cybertron has been consumed by a civil war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, and both factions hunt the AllSpark, the artifact that is the source of all Transformer life. The Decepticon Blackout attacks a U.S. military base in Qatar and taps its network before the staff cut the cables, and survivors flee into the desert. In the United States, teenager Sam Witwicky buys his first car, a yellow Camaro that drives itself and turns out to be the Autobot scout Bumblebee. The car helps him get the attention of his classmate Mikaela Banes. Government analyst Maggie Madsen traces the signal used in the break-in as the Pentagon tries to learn who is behind the attack.

- Rendering the robots pushed Industrial Light & Magic hard: according to Bay, the visual effects were so complex that it took ILM a staggering 38 hours to render just one frame of movement, so the company had to increase its processing facilities.
- A product placement deal with General Motors supplied the alternate forms for most of the Autobots and saved the production $3 million; GM also provided nearly two hundred cars, most of them flood damaged or non-salable, destined for destruction in the climactic battle scene.
- The company shot at Hoover Dam and at The Pentagon, the first time since the September 11 attacks that film crews had been allowed at these locations.
- Don Murphy was initially planning a G.I. Joe film adaptation, but when the United States launched the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, Hasbro suggested adapting the Transformers franchise instead.
- Howard Stern was offered the role of Frenzy, the Decepticon hacker who transforms into a PGX Boombox and later a Nokia N93i, but turned it down when his agent talked him out of it; Reno Wilson took the part.
- Michael Bay was asked to direct by Spielberg on July 30, 2005, but initially he dismissed the film as a "stupid toy movie".
- Frank Welker was considered to reprise his role, but according to the film's DVD commentary Bay thought his voice did not fit, so Weaving was chosen instead; after Weaving left the role, Welker returned as the voice of Megatron in later sequels.
