Plot summary
On Halloween, a masked killer murders Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. and leaves a message at the scene addressed to Batman. Bruce Wayne, two years into his nights as the city's vigilante, works the case with Lieutenant Jim Gordon, the one officer of the Gotham City Police Department he trusts, while the rest of the force holds him in disdain. The following night the police commissioner, Pete Savage, is killed and a second message appears. A thumb drive found in Mitchell's car holds images that lead the pair to the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub run by Oswald Cobblepot, a lieutenant of the crime boss Carmine Falcone. There Batman notices Selina Kyle, a waitress whose roommate, Annika Kosolov, has gone missing.

- Ben Affleck was announced as the star in October 2014 and by 2016 had signed on to direct, produce and co-write the film as well, but he had reservations about the project and stepped down in January 2017, with Reeves taking over the following month.
- Farrell wore heavy prosthetics and a fat suit created by makeup artist Mike Marino, a transformation that made him look unrecognizable and took between two and four hours to apply each time.
- Nirvana's 1991 song “Something in the Way” is heard twice in the film, and its bassline is close to Giacchino's score; he clarified that this was a coincidence and said he was fortunate that his work “lied in perfectly against that song”.
- Reeves likened the Riddler to the Zodiac Killer for their practice of communicating with ciphers and riddles, and he found the similarity between Batman's goals and the Riddler's unsettling.
