Plot summary
Tuccio is the resident playwright of a New York repertory company at the start of the twentieth century. He offers the owners his new play, Illuminata, and they reject it, saying it is not finished. Celimene is a theater star, Dominique a young actor in the company, Old Flavio an actor in it, and Marco a bit player who is the object of the critic Bevalaqua's affections. Simone is an actress, and Rachel, an actress as well, is Tuccio's girlfriend. Astergourd owns a theater, and Pallenchio is her husband. Intrigue over the rejected play begins and reaches the company's young leads, with the influential critic Bevalaqua in the middle of it.
