Plot summary

Stu Miley draws a comic strip about Monkeybone, a raunchy monkey, and his agent Herb keeps pressing him as the strip grows into a franchise. He is set to propose to Julie McElroy, a sleep therapist who once helped him with his nightmares. A car accident puts him in a coma instead, and his spirit arrives in Down Town, a carnival limbo of mythical beings and visitors' imaginings, where Monkeybone lives too. Down Town belongs to Hypnos, the God of Sleep; his sister Death governs the Land of Death and issues Exit Passes that allow souls to return to the living. Stu's body lies in a hospital while Julie keeps vigil, and he needs an Exit Pass before the plug is pulled.
