Plot summary
In the Bronx in 1964, four young New Yorkers live through two days. A man offers two teenage boys two young women who seem intoxicated, along with cash to take them off his hands. Heinz has been released from prison, where he served time for attempted rape, and he returns home to see his ailing mother and to find Linda, the woman he attacked. Harry once shielded Linda from him; now a pacifist, he has turned away from violence, after his father, a policeman, was murdered, and after Dr. Martin Luther King called for non-violent protest against racism. Harry wants to join King's movement, which makes protecting Linda harder.

- The director said the parallels between the story, where Foster played a woman tormented by a troubled man, and Jodie Foster's own experience with John Hinckley "never occurred to either of us until people started asking us about it".
- There was reluctance to cast Jodie Foster, in part due to fears she was overweight, but according to Bill he prevailed and she took the lead.
- Tony Bill was impressed by John Patrick Shanley's writing after an actor auditioned for him using Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea; Bill asked the author if he had any screenplays, Shanley wrote Five Corners, and Bill optioned it immediately.
- The film has been misconstrued as public domain and pirated by many distributors who released poor quality VHS and DVD printings, though the Copyright Office has the copyright registered under Paragon Entertainment Corporation.
