Plot summary
Al Fountain is a middle-aged electrical engineer from Chicago, sent to Drip Rock, Tennessee, to oversee construction of his company's newest plant. The blue collar crew he manages mocks him, and the company then calls the project off. Back at his hotel, he finds his first gray hair. He rents a car and drives out to Splatchee Lake, a tourist spot he remembers from childhood, and finds it polluted. On the way back he meets The Kid, a young eccentric who lives outdoors in the woods surrounded by furniture and belongings. The Kid gives Al a new perspective, and the two men bond with two women of similar personality.

- For the scenes in which Al and the Kid watch wrestling, the filmmakers used footage from a real Smoky Mountain Wrestling event staged in 1995, with Buddy Landell as the good guy and Headbanger Thrasher billed as "Saddam Insane".
- Tom DiCillo's film has since picked up a cult following, drawing in fans of the director himself and of counterculture.
