Plot summary
Two worlds share Felix Bonhoeffer: the one he walks through and the one inside his head. He is an aging screenwriter at work on a murder mystery script, and the figures he invented begin crossing over into his waking days, while the life around him leaks into the pages in the same way. He is baffled by both. He is caught in a slipstream where time, memory, fantasy and reality run together, and the story he is writing and the man writing it keep swapping places. What Felix does not know is that his mind is close to giving way.

- Hopkins showed the script to director-producer Steven Spielberg, who praised the dialogue but warned that financing would be difficult. Hopkins rejected studios who wanted final cut and instead found a new, unidentified patron to finance the film for under $10 million.
