Plot summary
Anne Benton is a conceptual artist whose electronic pieces flash statements. Driving home one night, she gets a flat near some isolated factories and, while looking for help, sees Leo Carelli supervise a mob killing. She escapes and goes to the police. Two mobsters, Greek and Pinella, come to her house to silence her and kill her boyfriend, Bob. FBI agent Pauling offers her witness protection, but when she sees Carelli's lawyer John Luponi at the station, she pulls on another woman's wig and raincoat and flees, and mob boss Lino Avoca summons the hitman Milo.

- Hopper and Foster clashed from the first day of filming, on her shower scene: dissatisfied, she yelled "cut", which angered Hopper, who told her never to do that again. Hopper later told Charlie Rose that Foster warned Meryl Streep by phone several times to avoid him, and Streep never returned his calls.
- Hopper, who was used to having final cut privilege, was removed from editing by the producers and called the post-production "a vortex of a Vestron cesspool... a victim of bankruptcy and greed". About half an hour of footage was cut and most of Michel Colombier's original music replaced.
- Hopper disowned the film before its release after it was edited without his involvement by the producers, so he is credited under the pseudonym Alan Smithee; released by Vestron Pictures, Catchfire underperformed at the box office.
- During the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, Hopper hired Alex Cox to do another polish on the script while the film was already shooting. Tod Davies also performed uncredited rewrites.
