Plot summary
Four armed men board a New York City subway 6 train in the early afternoon, seize control of it, uncouple the front car and hold the passengers inside. Their leader, Ryder, reaches the Rail Control Center by phone and demands $10 million in cash within an hour, warning that he will shoot a hostage for every minute the money is late. The dispatcher who takes the call is Walter Garber, a twenty-six year veteran of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, working the control center while the agency investigates whether he took a bribe in a contract for new subway cars. Ryder will deal only with Garber. The hijackers set up internet access in the tunnel, where Ryder watches the stock market fall on his laptop.
