Plot summary

In 1962 a Cybertronian craft called the Ark crashes on the dark side of the Moon, carrying an invention meant to end the Autobot-Decepticon war. NASA detects the wreck, and the Apollo 11 mission secretly inspects it. Decades later, the Autobots work openly with humans. A mission to Chernobyl ends in a fight with Shockwave and his Driller, and Optimus Prime finds a fuel cell from the Ark. He and his team travel to the Moon, where they discover Sentinel Prime, their former leader, comatose beside five Pillars built for a Space Bridge. Optimus uses the Matrix of Leadership to revive him. On Earth, Sam Witwicky lives with his girlfriend Carly Spencer, unable to join the Autobots. At his new job, a co-worker named Jerry Wang hands him information about the Ark, and Sam turns to Seymour Simmons.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Megan Fox's exit from the franchise followed a scandal: reports said producer Steven Spielberg chose not to renew her contract after she compared Michael Bay's work ethic to Adolf Hitler, while Bay later said Spielberg told him to fire her, a claim Spielberg denied.
  • Veteran Transformers voice actor Corey Burton, who had voiced Shockwave since the original 1980s cartoon, turned down the chance to reprise the character in this film, citing his schedule and disinterest in blockbusters; the role went to Frank Welker instead.
  • Filming stopped after a stunt accident in Hammond, Indiana seriously injured an extra: a steel cable snapped from a failed weld and struck her car, fracturing her skull and leaving her permanently brain-damaged, paralyzed on one side and blind in one eye.
  • The most complex visual-effects shot, the Driller monster destroying a computer-generated skyscraper, took up to 288 hours to render per frame, far beyond the 72 hours per frame needed for Devastator in the previous film.
  • Animators modeled Sentinel Prime's unusually human-like, expressive robot face on actor Sean Connery, then reworked the design once Leonard Nimoy was cast to voice the character.
  • The climactic three-way fight between Sentinel Prime, Optimus Prime and Megatron was originally planned to take place on the water of the Chicago River, but budget cuts pushed the filmmakers to stage it on a bridge instead.
  • Dark of the Moon reused footage from Michael Bay's earlier film The Island, echoing how he had already recycled shots from his 2001 film Pearl Harbor into the first Transformers movie.
