Plot summary
Max Klein is flying with his business partner, Jeff Gordon, when the plane plummets. In the cabin he stays oddly calm and comforts the passengers, among them a boy traveling alone. Most aboard die; Max walks away unhurt, and the press calls him a hero. Investigators and an airline psychiatrist, Dr. Bill Perlman, press him for answers, and his partner's widow, Nan Gordon, asks how Jeff died. Among the survivors is Carla Rodrigo, whose infant was in her lap during the fall. Max rents a car instead of heading home and drops in on Alison, a girlfriend from high school he has not seen in twenty years. Back with his wife Laura and his son Jonah, he is changed and distant, drawing pictures of the crash and certain he cannot die.

- Screenwriter Rafael Yglesias was inspired to write the script after he was in a car accident himself, and began the story after reading about United Airlines Flight 232, which crashed in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1989.
- Winona Ryder auditioned for the film but was rejected because star Jeff Bridges thought she was too young to portray his love-interest.
