Plot summary
John Henry Jack Armstrong is a Harvard-educated biotech executive who informs on his bosses; their business dealings come under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. He loses his job, his superior Leland Powell accuses him of securities fraud, and his assets are frozen. Branded a whistle-blower, he cannot find work. His ex-fiancée Fatima Goodrich, who came out as a lesbian, and her girlfriend Alex Guerrero offer him money to father a child for them, though bitterness over their past together is still unresolved. He takes the money; word spreads; women with cash to spare pay him ten thousand dollars each to try to conceive.

- Spike Lee based the title of the film on the XFL football player Rod Smart, who gained some notoriety by nicknaming himself "He Hate Me".
- Before filming, Lee hired the lesbian author and sex columnist Tristan Taormino as a consultant. Taormino put him through what she called "lesbian boot camp", teaching him about lesbian life through books, visits to lesbian bars and panel discussions.
- Filming was done on Super 16 and took 28 days in New York City. The film featured a close-up scene of a real human birth, as Lee's 1990 film Mo' Better Blues had done.
