Plot summary
The premise is a single soul that returns in one body after another through the centuries, each time as a different man. His earliest life is that of a caveman with a wife and children. Raiders come, and because he holds back when he should act, his family is carried away, his wife's parting words a plea not to lose the children. The soul is the one thread through stories that span man's history on Earth, and each life is a vignette of its own, the same relationships and the same mistakes coming around again. What he has to learn is the meaning of courage.

- After poor test screenings, Warner Bros. instructed Bill Forsyth to trim 40 minutes from the film and to add narration and a happy ending. His 160-minute cut was reduced to 122 minutes, and Forsyth subsequently disowned the film.
