Plot summary
NEST, the joint task force of Autobots and soldiers, hunts the Decepticons still on Earth two years after Mission City. In Shanghai a Decepticon warns of the Fallen's return, and Soundwave hacks a military satellite and takes AllSpark material from a Navy base. Sam Witwicky, now at college, touches a smaller shard, starts seeing Cybertronian symbols, and kitchen appliances come to life and attack; Bumblebee saves him and his parents. Sam passes the shard to his girlfriend, Mikaela Banes. The Decepticons believe the symbols Sam sees can lead them to a new Energon source, while a presidential envoy blames the Autobots for the destruction and wants them gone.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To finish the film before a possible Directors Guild strike, Michael Bay locked writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Ehren Kruger in two hotel rooms for four months to write the screenplay, with the trio checking each other's work twice a day.
- Before Ramón Rodríguez was cast as Leo Spitz, Jonah Hill was in talks for the role, but Seth Rogen told him to turn it down and focus on his own projects, so Hill did Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian instead.
- Michael Bay won permission to shoot at Egypt's Giza pyramids after contacting archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who told him, "Don't hurt my pyramids." A 50 ft camera crane was used there.
- The Royal Jordanian Air Force helped with filming in Jordan at Petra, Wadi Rum and Salt because King Abdullah II is a fan of science fiction movies.
- Rendering Devastator used more than 85% of ILM's render farm capacity. The scene's complexity and the need to render it at IMAX resolution made one computer "explode".
- The destruction of the pyramid appears in about five shots and took seven months to simulate the behavior of the blocks.
- The close-up of Alice's face breaking apart as she changes from human disguise to robot took five animators three months to finish.
