Plot summary
Paul Harker lives with his father, Denny, in upstate New York, kept apart from other people by hypertrichosis, the condition that grows fur and hair across his face and body and makes friendship impossible. On his thirteenth birthday a mysterious gift arrives, and Paul leaves home to find the mother he has never met. To pay for the journey he takes a short job with Mr. Silk, an amusement park owner who puts Paul's appearance on display for paying crowds. On the road Paul meets Aristiana, a transgender girl who sings and performs as a mermaid, and she becomes his companion, while Denny and the detective Pollok search for him.
